Evaluating human rights in the extractives sector

In the extractives sector we have evaluated the effectiveness of human rights policies in one of our client's operations in India, Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, Burma and Uganda, in some instances working alongside the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

The assessment involved spending two-weeks on-site where GoodCorporation assessors reviewed documents and interviewed stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, contractors, local NGOs and business partners to assess how well each of the human rights framework policy points were working.

A grade was given for each framework point and an overall assessment of effectiveness awarded. Good practice was identified and included in a detailed management report alongside recommendations for remedial action.

GoodCorporation, Total S.A. and the Danish Institute for Human Rights collaborated to elaborate the human rights aspects of the GoodCorporation ethical assessment methodology.
