A global impact
Anti-corruption assessment in EgyptÂ
For one of our oil, gas and energy clients we conducted a review of its anti-corruption programme in Egypt. The review evaluated the application of the group programme on the ground. The review looked at the challenges of working with the port authorities in Egypt and considered how collective action between companies can be used to combat bribery demands from port agents and intermediaries. GoodCorporation has conducted similar ABC reviews for clients in over 80 countries worldwide. About 50% of GoodCorporation’s work is assessment work, covering ABC or any other of the 17 code of conduct topics that we work on.Â
Bullying and harassment investigation in GermanyÂ
For one of our global FMCG clients, we conducted an investigation of allegations of bullying and harassment by a senior manager against his team members. The investigation was conducted over a four-week period with interviews of all of the key witnesses and the alleged perpetrator. The review findings were used to institute disciplinary proceedings. GoodCorporation has supported investigations in over 10 countries. These investigations may relate either to allegations of poor behaviour by a senior employee or allegations relating to fraud, bribery or other white-collar crime.Â
Bullying and harassment investigation in Argentina
GoodCorporation worked in Argentina on a project for one of our oil and gas clients to review allegations of bullying and harassment in one of the company’s key operational sites. The challenges in Argentina are important, in particular in relation to sensitive trade union relations which can make investigations complex. Also, the rapid changes in the economic environment can add to the pressure felt by all employees in terms of coping with devaluation and the cost of living. The investigation followed up concerns raised by a number of whistleblowers about the behaviour of a senior manager, touching on both bullying, harassment and also possible fraudulent use of company funds and property. It led to the dismissal of an employee and a subsequent project to help reset working relations in the operational site. GoodCorporation has conducted investigations in over 10 countries in multiple languages.Â
Business ethics and ESG assessment in Hong KongÂ
For a Hong Kong based private equity firm we conducted a review of 10 portfolio companies to measure the ESG and business ethics standards of these companies with a view to driving improvements. The aim was to ensure that the private equity firm would maximise value on exit of its shareholdings of these portfolio companies. The review covered ABC, money laundering, sanctions, non-discrimination, DEI, whistleblowing, fraud and business continuity. The portfolio companies were located in the UK, Congo, Kurdistan, USA, France, Israel, Turkmenistan and Cameroon. GoodCorporation has conducted business ethics/ESG reviews in over 80 countries in a wide range of sectors. Assessment and ‘measurement’ work like this comprises about 50% of GoodCorporation’s projects.Â
Human rights assessment in Turkey
For a global cosmetics group, GoodCorporation conducted a human rights impact assessment of its harvesting of a key crop in Turkey. The review considered the risks of child labour, forced labour and poor working conditions in the supply-chain. This type of assessment is complex because of the wide range of farms, intermediaries and buying houses for the crop. It is also complex because of the presence of Syrian refugees in Turkey who often do not have the right to work legally in the country and are therefore at risk of being exploited. GoodCorporation has carried out human rights impact assessments in more than 10 countries around the world. Our business ethics and ESG assessments mean that we have also conducted reviews of labour rights and working conditions in over 80 countries.
Code of conduct development for Indian conglomerate
For a leading Indian conglomerate, GoodCorporation led a group-wide process to develop a new code of conduct. GoodCorporation used its code benchmarking tools and workshop methodologies to take each of the functions and key group business units through a needs assessment. These workshops were also used to build consensus and to arbitrate between different business units with different needs. GoodCorporation supported the final design and roll-out of the new code to the company’s international business units. GoodCorporation has conducted code of conduct projects in over 10 countries around the world. These projects are often used to help our clients set a new cultural direction, to update supporting policies and procedures and to launch assessment processes to ensure that the code works on the ground.Â
Safeguarding assessment in the UK
For a global media organisation GoodCorporation carried out a review of its safeguarding policies and procedures following on from a scandal involving a high-profile paedophile who had worked in the media organisation. The review used GoodCorporation’s safeguarding framework as a base for an assessment of policies and procedures. The client published GoodCorporation’s report and made a public commitment to implement the findings in full. GoodCorporation is undertaking safeguarding work in over 10 countries worldwide, including a large multistakeholder project in seven Sub-Saharan African countries. Â
Anti-corruption assessment in MexicoÂ
For a London-listed mining group, GoodCorporation conducted an assessment of its anti-corruption programme in its mining operations in Mexico, using GoodCorporation’s anti-corruption framework. The review was particularly challenging because of the organised crime groups that infiltrate legitimate business operations in Mexico. The review helped the London board to assure themselves that ‘adequate procedures’ are in place to prevent bribery and corruption, a key protection related to the UK Bribery Act. GoodCorporation uses its benchmarking to help measure the adequacy of our clients’ anti-corruption programmes. We have completed over 150 of these assessments and we therefore have exceptionally strong data to help our clients measure the strength of their compliance programmes.Â
Working conditions review in the USA
For a large DIY product manufacturer, GoodCorporation conducted a review of working conditions in its factories in the USA. These factories are recognised as having excellent industrial relations and a strong focus on employee development. However, international competitive pressures mean that wages are low and static, causing high turnover and damaging morale. The assessment helped the management to understand better the working conditions for its workforce and to consider strategies to help address these issues. GoodCorporation has carried out business ethics assessments, including working conditions in over 80 countries.Â
Human rights assessment in South AfricaÂ
For a global oil and gas client, GoodCorporation carried out a review of the human rights impacts in one of South Africa’s largest refineries. The review considered the treatment of employees, contractors, workers of suppliers who work inside the refinery as well as community impacts. The complex racial politics of South Africa mean that this type of review is particularly sensitive with traditionally disadvantaged communities the key focus of the review. GoodCorporation has carried out similar projects in over 80 countries, often with a practical focus on how people are treated and what can be done to protect the most vulnerable workers and community members.Â
